Hands-on Education in Food Growing, Soil Health, and Sustainability.

Welcome to our Primary School Programs, where we bridge the gap between the classroom and the natural world.
Specifically designed for Prep to Year 6, our immersive, QLD curriculum-aligned excursions and incursions provide hands-on depth in Biological Science, HASS, and Health & PE.
Through interactive exploration, we empower students to understand where their food comes from, how to make healthier food choices, and how to protect the earth through regenerative growing and composting.

School Excursions

Our School Excursion Program is designed to inspire curiosity, foster teamwork, and provide hands-on learning experiences that align with the Queensland school curriculum.

The program is suitable for Prep to Year 6 and can be tailored to make each age group’s experience engaging and meaningful.

Students start their excursion on a guided farm walk, in which they follow educational signs and discover key features of regenerative farming, composting, bees and how we manage the farm. As they walk, we identify the fruits, vegetables, and herbs we have growing at the farm, and participate in natural learning opportunities with Q&A as we walk. They will then participate in two additional experiences, chosen by you:

🪱 Worm Farming & Compost: Students learn about what goes into making a good compost, as well as seeing samples. We discuss the role of compost in organic farming and why it is so important to be composting food scraps at home. We then look at the different worm farms we have on the farm, and the children do a hands-on activity with the worm farms and compost bays.

🐝 Seeds & Bees: Students discover seeds growing on the farm and learn about the role of pollinators in natural ecosystems. Children can spot our insects and pollinators, we talk about making homes for them, and they can see our bee hotels, native bees and honey bee hives on the farm. They have hands-on experience with a sample of seeds collected from the farm which they can take home to grow.

🪴Herbs and Growing a Kitchen Garden: The students are encouraged to explore our kitchen garden, and are invited to see, touch, smell and taste a wide selection of culinary and medicinal herbs, including edible flowers. The students have the opportunity to prepare a herb blend of their choice to take home and use.

❋ Food and Fibre: We will discuss the food we grow on the farm that has a dual purpose as a fibre that can make things such as rope, baskets and clothing. They will see it grown, handle the raw material and see samples of products we can make. They get to experience weaving first hand and make a woven product.

🪏 Making Healthy Soil + How to Make a No-Dig Garden Bed: The students look at our hugelkultur bed, raised beds, and in ground beds and we talk about natural ways that we build healthy soil through composting, worm farms, fertigation system, soil amendments and minimal till methods of farming. They are able to make a mini no-dig garden of their own to take home.

Group Logistics: For rotations, students are divided into groups of 15–20 participants. Each group requires a minimum of two supervising adults, with the expectation that younger year levels may require additional support.

Address: Green Thumb Farm, 2204 Mt Samson Rd, Samford Valley, Qld, 4520. Free parking for cars and buses onsite.

School Incursions

Our incursion is all about helping children build a real connection to where their food comes from, encouraging healthier choices, environmental awareness, and a sense of wonder. Through sensory exploration, creative thinking, and scientific enquiry, students will engage with fresh produce in a way that’s meaningful and memorable.

The program is suitable for Prep to Year 6 and is tailored to make each age group’s experience engaging and meaningful.

Sessions run for approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Start time is usually at 10 am, although it can be adjusted to suit your needs.

You choose the program:

🌿 Exploring Herbs: Students explore herbs and their varying uses, discovering the wide range of culinary and medicinal benefits. We look at native and non-native herbs and how you can grow herbs at home. Students receive propagated herbs to grow in the classroom along with samples of herbs that they can dry and use.

🌱 Farm-to-Fork Journey: Students map out the journey that food takes as it travels from farm to fork in varying situations. We consider environmental and sustainable considerations, the differences between organic and non-organic foods and the health benefits of eating fresh food. Students get to plant a pot of microgreens to grow at school or home.

🥕 Living Soils: Students dive into soil exploration, record their findings and make predictions. We discover what makes great soil and how we can turn all soils into great soil for growing. Students make a liquid fertiliser from plants that they can watch over the coming weeks as it develops. This can then be used at school or at home.
