Sustainability Education Programs in Brisbane: A Key to a Greener Future

Summary: Sustainability education programs equip people of all ages with the knowledge, skills, and lived experience to care for the environment and make more informed choices. At Green Thumb Farm in Samford Valley, these programs go beyond the classroom — connecting children, families, and community members with real soil, real food, and real change.
The way we understand our relationship with the natural world shapes every decision we make — what we eat, how we grow food, what we teach our children, and what kind of communities we build. Sustainability education is one of the most powerful tools we have for shifting that understanding — not through instruction alone, but through experience.
At Green Thumb Farm, just 35 minutes from Brisbane, we've spent the past two years building a living laboratory for exactly this kind of learning. Since opening in 2024, more than 2,500 people have come through our programs — and the results show what's possible when sustainability education is grounded in something real.
Here's what that looks like in practice.
Hands-On Learning in a Real, Working Farm
The most powerful sustainability lessons don't happen at a desk. They happen when a child discovers a worm in the soil for the first time, or when an adult realises that compost they've been throwing away could be rebuilding the earth beneath their feet.
All of our programs are built around this principle. Whether it's a primary school class exploring our compost systems and kitchen gardens, a group of toddlers discovering edible flowers in our Little Green Thumbs sessions, or adults learning to grow seasonally in a Gather & Grow Workshop — the learning happens by doing. Participants touch, smell, observe, and explore, rather than simply being told what sustainable living looks like.
This approach isn't just more enjoyable — it's more effective. Research consistently shows that experiential learning produces deeper understanding and longer-lasting behaviour change than traditional instruction alone.
Sustainability Education for Every Age and Stage
One of the things that makes Green Thumb Farm unusual is that our sustainability education programs genuinely reach across the full span of life — from babies to adults.
Little Green Thumbs is a free, sensory outdoor program for children aged 0–5 and their parents and carers, founded with support from the City of Moreton Bay. It introduces the very youngest members of our community to nature, seasonal food, and the living world around them — at a pace and in a way that's appropriate for little bodies and curious minds.
School excursions and incursions bring hands-on sustainability learning to primary school students from Prep to Year 6, with curriculum-aligned programs that explore chemical-free food growing, composting, soil health, and biodiversity. Schools can come to the farm, or we can bring the program to them.
Gather & Grow Workshops are practical community sessions for adults — covering composting, seasonal gardening, and sustainable growing techniques that participants can take straight home and apply. Because sustainability education doesn't stop when we leave school.
Building Real Environmental Awareness
There's a difference between knowing that soil health matters and actually kneeling in the earth and understanding why. Between being told that composting reduces waste and watching organic matter transform into something rich and alive.
At Green Thumb Farm, we build environmental awareness through direct experience with the systems that sustain us — food production, soil biology, water cycles, pollinator health, and the interconnection between all of them. Our educators guide participants through the full journey from soil to plate, making the abstract feel immediate and personal.
The outcomes are measurable. Since 2024, 80.5% of our program participants reported increased awareness of sustainable farming practices, and 68% developed a stronger understanding of composting and waste reduction. These aren't aspirational figures — they reflect what happens when sustainability education is rooted in a real, working environment.
Reconnecting with Food, Soil, and Nature
Something deeper happens when people — especially young people — spend time on a working farm. A sense of connection that's hard to find anywhere else, and hard to replicate once lost.
In our programs, participants don't just learn about ecosystems in the abstract. They observe native bees at work in our pollinator garden, discover what grows in a subtropical food forest, care for seedlings, and explore the relationship between healthy soil and healthy food. For many of the children who visit us, it's the first time they've seen food growing in the ground.
That reconnection changes things. It shifts the way people think about what they eat, where it comes from, and what's worth protecting. Educators and parents consistently tell us that children leave our programs with greater curiosity, greater confidence, and a genuine care for the natural world that carries well beyond their visit.
Creating Lasting Change in Our Community
The real measure of any sustainability education program is what happens after people leave. Do they grow something at home? Do they make different choices at the shops? Do they talk to their children differently about food and the environment?
Our data suggests the answer is yes. Across our 2025 school programs, 75% of participants reported increased food growing knowledge, and 64% left with a greater awareness of healthy eating and seasonal food choices. More broadly, across all programs since 2024, 67% of participants said they intend to support local and seasonal food systems going forward.
That's the ripple effect of sustainability education done well — not just awareness in the moment, but genuine intention to act. And when those participants are children, the impact compounds over a lifetime.
Green Thumb Farm exists to show that this kind of learning is possible, accessible, and deeply needed — right here in South East Queensland.
