A Unique Brisbane Day Trip: Authentic Australian Farm Experiences in Samford Valley

Summary: Just 35 minutes from Brisbane CBD, Green Thumb Farm in Samford Valley offers international visitors a rare and memorable experience. A small-scale educational farm in a beautiful rural setting, it showcases the extraordinary variety of food that can be grown close to the city — with guided group experiences including a herbal tea journey and a farm-to-plate harvest lunch.
Brisbane is a wonderful city. But some of the most memorable experiences in South East Queensland are found not in the city itself, but in the green valleys and quiet communities that surround it.
Samford Valley — just 35 minutes from Brisbane CBD — is one of those places. Rolling hills, clean air, and a pace of life that feels genuinely different from the city. And tucked into this beautiful landscape is Green Thumb Farm: a working, community-powered farm that has become one of the most unique and meaningful group experiences available to international visitors in the Brisbane region.
Authentic Australia, Beyond the Tourist Trail
For many international visitors, particularly those travelling in groups, the desire to experience the "real Australia" — its land, its food, its community spirit — is just as strong as the pull of its famous cities and coastlines.
Green Thumb Farm offers exactly that. It is a genuine working farm, not a theme park or a staged attraction. Everything here is real — the soil, the food growing in it, the community of volunteers who people who tend it, and the story of how it all came to be.
It is important to note that Green Thumb Farm is not a large rural property with livestock and broad-acre crops. It is a small-scale educational farm, intentionally located close to the city, with a very different purpose: to demonstrate the remarkable variety of food that can be grown in a subtropical climate, in a compact space, using chemical-free and sustainable principles. Our goal is to grow one of everything that thrives in our region — so that every visitor can discover what is possible, and leave feeling inspired.
The farm grows food without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. Visitors can see, smell, and in many cases taste the results firsthand. For visitors from countries where food safety and clean growing practices are highly valued, this is not a small thing. It is a reassuring and beautiful demonstration of how food can and should be grown.
A Community Educational Farm With a Purpose
Green Thumb Farm is a not-for-profit community educational farm and registered charity. Our mission is to demonstrate that sustainable, chemical-free food growing is possible — and to educate people of all ages about how food is grown, why soil health matters, and what it means to live in greater harmony with the natural world.
Every dollar generated by the farm goes directly back into that mission: delivering education programs, restoring the land, and keeping this community resource alive and growing.
When a group visits Green Thumb Farm, they are not simply purchasing a tourism product. They are contributing to something meaningful — a community organisation that is actively working to heal the soil, support biodiversity, and reconnect people with where food comes from. That is a story worth sharing, and one that resonates deeply with visitors who care about the impact of their travel.
Choose Your Group Experience
Green Thumb Farm offers two private guided experiences for groups of ten or more. Both are led by our experienced farm team and provide an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at how the farm works.
Garden to Cup: A Herbal Tea Experience (1.5 hours)
A gentle and beautiful introduction to the farm. Guests wander through our gardens, discovering the herbs and native plants that grow across the property — lemon myrtle, native tea tree, native mint, holy basil, and more. Together, guests harvest fresh and native herbs and explore a range of herbal tea infusions made in the garden. The experience concludes with time to slow down and savour the flavours in the open air, surrounded by the farm's natural beauty.
This experience is particularly well suited to groups who appreciate a relaxed pace, a sensory journey, and the ritual of sharing tea together.
Farm to Plate Experience (3 hours)
A deeper immersion in the life of the farm. Guests walk the gardens and productive growing areas, learning about our chemical-free and sustainable farming practices — composting, soil health, biodiversity, and food production. The experience culminates in harvesting a fresh seasonal salad together and sharing it as a group, surrounded by mountain views and the sounds of the farm.
This is the experience for groups who want to understand Australian food growing from the ground up — and leave with a real connection to what they have eaten.
Both experiences include a guided look at our closed-loop composting systems, pollinator habitats, and the food forest — where bananas, sugar cane, lemongrass, sweet potato, and a rich variety of edible plants grow in layers that mimic a natural forest structure.
What You Will See and Discover
Green Thumb Farm is a beautiful property, and the visual experience of a visit is part of what makes it so memorable. While it is a small-scale farm by Australian standards, what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in variety and intention.
Our goal has always been to grow one of everything that thrives in our subtropical Queensland climate — creating a living catalogue of what is possible close to the city. The result is a densely planted, richly varied landscape that surprises and delights at every turn.
The guided farm loop takes visitors through the mandala garden — a circular bed of seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers — past the six-bay compost system that transforms organic matter back into living soil, through the pollinator area where native bee hives and honey bees can be observed at work, and along the fruit tree pathway that leads to the food forest. Here, bananas, sugar cane, lemongrass, sweet potato, and a rich variety of edible plants grow in layers that mimic a natural forest structure. From there, the path winds through the herb and flower gardens before returning to the main farm area.
It is a landscape that rewards curiosity. There is always something in bloom, something to discover, and something to photograph.
Clean Food, Meaningful Choices
One of the things international visitors consistently notice at Green Thumb Farm is the quality of what is growing here. Every vegetable, herb, and edible plant on the property has been grown without synthetic chemicals — using sustainable, organic growing principles that respect both human health and the health of the soil.
For visitors who are conscious about what they eat and where it comes from, spending time on a farm that takes these values seriously is both reassuring and inspiring. It is a reminder that clean, honest food is possible — and that the choices we make about how food is grown matter.
